This math problem is something I am having difficulty with and I don't understand the way to start!

Let's see where we can begin by looking at the cookies that one person brings.

 

This one person is going to bring cookies for 8 other people in the group.  Since each receives a dozen (12) cookies, this one person would have to bring 12x8 = 96 cookies.

 

The same is true for each of the other 8 people in the group.  Each person would have to bring 96 (8 dozen cookies).

 

So the total number of cookies brought to the exchange = 96 (8) = 768
