I am not sure if your statement is valid...it appears to be something that you think rather than a question from a text-book.
Technically, an element is defined as "A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. An element is composed of atoms that have the same atomic number, that is, each atom has the same number of protons in its nucleus as all other atoms of that element".
So for instance you have the element Oxygen or Hydrogen. The two of them combine to give a compound called water but each of them cannot be simplified into anything simpler than Oxygen or Hydrogen respectively.
Atoms of the same element may have isotopes, i.e., atoms with different number of neutrons but with the same atomic number (number of protons).
