To convert units without changing the value, we use the Multiplicative Identity (that is, 1).
This problem will use:
1 = (1000 m) / ( 1 km ) [or 1000 meters per kilometer]
1 = (1 hr) / (60 min)
1 = (1 min) / (60 sec)
Convert:
160 km/hr
((160 km)/(1 hr))*1
((160 km)/(1 hr))*((1000 m)/(1 km))*((1 hr)/(60 min))*((1 min)/(60 sec))
(160/1)*(100/1)*(1/60)*(1/60) m/s [note: km, hr, min all cancel out]
[also note: I write this way to paste into MS Excel.]
4.44 m/s
