Then based on the problem description, the following 2 equations can be made:

 

(5) (x) + (3) (y) = 233

(1) (x) + (1) (y) = 55

 

From the second equation: x = 55-y

 

Plugging in this value for x in the first equation gives:

 

5 (55-y) + 3y = 233

 

Solving for y:

 

275 - 5y + 3y = 233

 

275 - 2y = 233

 

2y = 275-233 = 42

 

y = 21

 

Since x is 55 - y, then x = 34
