which is greater 7/9 or 5/6

I'm having a problem answering this I think I got it but I want to make sure

I tackle all of these types of problems by converting them to decimals, or giving them the same denominator. Let's try both ways.

 

7/9 = 0.77777777 repeating

5/6 = 0.83333333 repeating

 

You can see that 0.83 is greater than 0.77.

 

7/9 and 5/6 can have the same denominator of 54.

7/9 (multiply the top and bottom by 6) to get 42/54

5/6 (multiply the top and bottom by 9) to get 45/9

 

Now, you can look only at the numerators, 42 and 45. 45 is greater, so 5/6 is greater than 7/9.

You can change both to decimals and compare them.

7/9 is 7 divided by 9 or .7777 repeating.

5/6 is 5 divided by 6 or .83333 the 3 repeating.

 

Now you are comparing .77 and .833 and .83 is greater than .77

Without a calculator, I would find the least common denominator: 18.

 

Hence 7/9 = 14/18, and 5/6=15/18.

 

Since 15/18 > 14/18, this implies 5/6 > 7/9.

the LCM of 9 and 6 is 18

15/18 > 14/18 so 5/6 > 7/9

you can change them to decimals

7/9=0.777...

5/6=0.8333...

you can cross multiply "upwards" and compare the products

 

42      45                (6*7=42 and 9*5=45)
