I have a clarification question. The end of your second sentence says "his friend". Do you mean friends. Also, what is the initial amount of candy he has? This changes the answer significantly.

My daughter's teacher just sent her an email and said he left part of the problem out. There was a total of 38 pieces of candy. We got it now. Thanks for your help i thought i was going nuts since i couldn't figure it out
