Question

A baseball hit by a batter follows a path can be described by the equation h=-5t^2 + 10t + 1. where h represents the height, in meters, and t represents the time, in seconds, after the ball was hit 

 

a) create a table of values from 0 to 3s with 0.5 increments 

b) how high off the ground was the ball when it was hit 

c) what was the max height if the ball ? how long did it take for the ball to reach its max height ?

d) when does the ball hit the ground

b) In order to find the height of the ball above the ground when it was struck set t equal to zero

 

     h(t) = -5(0)^2 + 10(0) + 1

 

     =   1m 

 

 

The ball was 1 m above ground when  it was struck.

 

c)  The max height of the ball is   6m  and it reached that height when t = 1 second.

 

d) Let h(t) = 0 to find the time when the ball hits the ground

 

-5t^2 + 10t + 1 = 0

 

use the quadratic formula to find the value of t  and pick the positive value for t for your answer since time cannot be negative .
