kyle made a loaf of banana bread. He gave equal portions of 1/2 of the loaf to 4 friends. What diagram could Kyle use to find the fraction of the whole loaf of banana bread that each friend got?

For a casual viewer to recognize the drawing (without much explanation) is very important.  It should look like a loaf of banana bread.

 

Once divided in half, the 4 equal portions should allow anyone who can count to determine "the fraction of the whole loaf of banana bread that each friend got."

Here is a box (representing the loaf of banana bread) cut in half.  Now divide one of the halves into 4 parts one for each of the 4 friends.

 

Since one of the halves was divided into 4 parts you should divide the other half into 4 parts also.  This keeps the divisions the same.

 

Notice that the entire loaf is divided into 8 parts.  

 

This shows that each friend got 1/8 (one eighth) of the loaf.

I would use a pie diagram represented by a circle, then I would draw a diameter dividing the circle in two equal halves, each one would represent half of the banana bread. Then using a transporter ( plastic round rule calibrated in degrees) I would divide one of those halves into 4 pie sections of 45 degrees each that will represent each of the equal portions those friends got.
