There are too many variables to actually answer the question, but you can set up the formula.
Where X is the number of students at the school:
$ = 8[.5(.4x)] + 2[.5(.4x)]
In other words, the total amount of money made is $8 times half of the 40% of the student body that went, and $2 times the other half.
You can simplify it to be:
$ = 1.6x + .4x
$ = 2x
Or in other words, they made $2 times the number of students at the school.
