let x be the number of books

the $100 is for shipping and books, which means

 

100 = 6.95+3.95*x

 

subtract 6.95 on both sides

 

93.05=3.95x

 

divide 3.95 on both sides

23.556 = x

 

since the number of books is a whole number, it would be 23
