A national park admits state residents and visitors. The number of total people admitted into the park in June was 786. The park reported that it admitted 13 state residents for every 9 visitors. How many state residents did the park admit? How many visitors?

This problem can be set up as a ratio or a fraction. Let's set up
as fraction......

 

Let:
s=state residents total

v=visitors
t=total people

 

You can set up the fraction numerator, denominator in any

         fashion.  I chose the following:

s/t=s/786......state residents divided by total

13/(13+9).......state residents divided by total (from park reporting)

 

So lets equate the two fractions and solve for "s".....

s/786=13/22....Eq1

22s=13(786)....cross multiply

22s=10218......simplify

∴ s=464.5.......say 464 state residents

 

Lets check by substituting 464 back into Eq1.......

464/786=13/22

        .59=.59...true, √check

 

Therefore, in June, 464 state residents visited the park.
