It is very important to understand that the multiplicative identity (that is, 1) may change the units but not the value.
So, let's start with:
5 gallon
(5 gallon) * 1 * 1
(5 gallon) * (4 quarts / 1 gallon) * 1 [note: 4 quarts = 1 gallon]
(5 gallon) * (4 quarts / 1 gallon) * (4 cups / 1 quart)
(5*4*4) cups [note: gallons and quarts cancel out, leaving cups]
80 cups

Hi La'tina, 4 cups in a quart and 4 quarts in a gallon. Multiply the number of cups in a quart by the number of quarts in a gallon. This gives the number of cups in a gallon. To get the number of cups in a 5 gallon jug, multiply the number of cups in a gallon by 5.
Let TC be the number of cups in a gallon.
TC = 4 * 4 = 16, or there are 16 cups in each gallon.
Let T be the number of cups in 5 gallons.
T = TC * 5 = 16 * 5 = 80, or the total number of cups in 5 gallons is 80.
Hi La'tina,
If there are 4 cups in a quart and 4 quarts in a gallon, then there must be 16 cups in a gallon. . . 4 x 4 = 16
In 2 gallons there would be 16 x 2 = 32 cups
In 3 gallons there would be 16 x 3 = 48 cups
So how many cups are there in 5 gallons?
Have fun.
