Hi Amey, here is one way to solve the problem. Let x represent the amount of money Mr. Jones started with.
He gave 40% to his wife. 40% as a decimal is .40. The wife gets .40x of Mr. Jones money.
Mr Jones has .60x money remaining.
Of the .60x money remaining, he gives each of his three sons 20%. 20% as a decimal is .20.
Number of sons: 3
Each gets 20% of .60x
This amounts to 3 * .20 * .60x or .36x of Mr. Jones .60x
Mr. Jones now has .24x remaining of his original money.
He spends one half of the remaining money. One half of .24x is .12x.
Mr. Jones now has .12x of his original money left, which he puts in the bank. He put .12x or 12000 in the bank.
You can find out the value for "x" by dividing 12000 by .12 or x = 100000.
To check:
40% went to the wife. That would equal 40000.
Mr. Jones has 60000 remaining.
He gives each of his 3 sons 20% or the remaining 60000. This is 3 * .20 * 60000 or 36000.
Mr. Jones is left with 60000 - 36000 or 24000.
He spends one half or 12000, which leaves him with 12000 to put in the bank.
