Graphing inequalities help please!!

Question

For a field trip to the museum, the science club can purchase individual tickets for $4 each or a group pass for $160. How many club members are necessary for it to be cheaper to buy a group pass than to buy individual tickets? Write and solve an inequality to answer this question.

$4 each means that each member pays $4.  A group pass for $160 means that everyone is covered, so no one has to pay individually.

 

 

Let x = the number of club members

 

Since we want pass to be cheaper than the total cost of individual tickets, we set the inequality

 

160 < 4x

 

 

Divide both side of the inequality by 4.

 

40 < x

 

x > 40

 

 

So in order for the pass to be cheaper than the total cost of individual tickets, at least 41 members must attend the trip.
