I love math, and I love to teach it.
Dear Angel,
Hello, please start your problem by writing it and underlining or highlighting key words or numbers.
Let X= number of student tickets Let Y= number of adult tickets
The cost of tickets for students= $3(X)
The cost of adult tickets= $6 (Y)
$3X + $6Y = $840 You have a system of equations here. Next I will use substitution to solve.
X + Y = 200 tickets sold
3X + 6( 200-X) = $840
3X + 1200 -6X = 840
1200-3X = 840 Add 3X to both sides of equal sign, and subtract 840 from both sides.
1200-840= 3X
360=3X
360/3 = X 120 = X Try the first original equation, and substitute value for "X."
3(X) + 6 (Y) =840
3(120) + 6Y=840
360 + 6Y = 840
6Y= 840-360=480
y=80 Therefore, 80 adults attended, and 120 students.
Note: [You can also now find out how much money was earned for each group.]
The last thing you can do would be to substitute values into the original equations to see if the answers check.
