The first step is to figure out how many square feet are in the lawn.
The landscaper gets $5 per square foot so if the landscaper were paid only $5, then the lawn would be 1 square foot . . . pretty small.
If he were paid $10, the lawn would be 2 square feet.
So you have to divide the amount he was paid by 5. . . 1200/5 = 240 square feet
Square feet is a measure of area and the formula for area is length times width.
The question says that the lawn is a square. That means that the width equals the length.
Now all you have to do is figure out the number that, when you multiply it by itself, equals 240.
You can randomly try some numbers and see what works. . . you know that 10 x 10 = 100 and 20 x 20 = 400 so the number is somewhere between those two.
An easier option is to use your calculator and realize that you are looking for the square root of 240.
The question asks for the nearest integer so you'll have to round off your answer.
