The left and right page numbers of an open book are two consecutive numbers whose sum is 33. Find these page numbers.

Sharlene, Let x=1 page, and x+1= the next page and together the pages=33.  Set the equation:  x+x+1=33; Combine the variables:  2x+1=33;  Subtract 1 from both sides of the equation.  2x=32; Now divide both sides of the equation by 2; x=16 which is the 1st page and 16+1=17 is the second page.  Check:  16+17=33.
