Yesterday, Jack drove 35 1/2 miles on 1 1/4 gallons of gasoline.  Calculate Jack's miles per gallon

  (35 1/2 miles) / (1 1/4 gallons)        ("per" means fraction)

  (71/2 miles) / (5/4 gallons)          (write each number carefully as improper fraction)

  (71/2) / (5/4)  miles/gallons      (we have the right units, just need to compute numbers)

  (71/2)*(4/5)  miles/gallon     (to divide by a fraction, invert denominator and multiply ! )

   (142/5) miles/gallon             

     28  2/5  miles/gallon       (now to proper fraction)

    28.4 miles/gallon              (same value as a decimal, if you want that)
