Linda,
the distributive property is the distribution of multiplication over addition.
The example usually given is
a(b+c) = ab + ac
if we look at your equation and substitute the following
a=1
b = u
c = (-3)
we would get
1(u-3) = 1u +1(-3) = u -3
I would also note that the distributive property also works with subtraction
a(b-c) = ab - ac
