conversion problem - feet and inches

Question

Faye is 5 feet 5 inches tall.  Faye is 10 inches shorter than her brother.  How tall is Faye's older brother?

There are 12 inches per foot

 

Faye is 5 ft 5 in

5(12)+5 = 65 inches tall

 

Faye is 10 inches shorter than her brother

Which means her brother is 10 inches taller than Faye

 

Brother's height is 65 + 10 = 75 inches

 

Divide the 75 inches by 12 in/ft and the remainder

will be the extra inches

 

75/12 = 6 3/12....  The brother is 6 ft 3 in tall

Except most people faced with this problem would not convert feet and inches to inches, and then convert back again.

 

5' 5" + 7" = 5" + 12" = 5" + 1" = 6". The height differential, 10", is 7" + 3".  So the remaining height after adding the 7" to the 5" to make the extra foot is 3".  So the brother is 6" 3".

Here is an easier answer

 

5.5 ft x 12 inches = 66 inches

 

66inches + 10 inches = 76 inches

 

76 inch/12 inch = 6.3 ft
