In a neighborhood of 43 households, 17 subscribe to the New York Times, 14 subscribe to the Wall Street Journal and 5 subscribe to both. What is the probability a randomly selected household subscribes to one, but not both of the papers

The number subscribing to New York Times only is 17 - 5 = 12.

 

The number subscribing to Wall Street Journal only is 14 - 5 = 9.

 

The number that subscribe to exactly one of the two is therefore 12 + 9 = 21.

 

This gives a probability 21/43 ≈ 0.488
