Hello Natasha
I suppose your answer is (X+5) (2X-1)
However, if you check your answer you can realize that is not a match with the original equation:
(X+5) (2X-1)= 2X2 - X +10X - 5 => 2X2 + 9X - 5 and this this different to 2X2 + 3X - 5 (the original).
If you apply the quadratic equation you can solve the problem:
X= -b +/- √¯(b2 - 4 a c) in the equation with this form: aX2 + bX + c
------------------------
2 a
Applying the above: a= 2 b= 3 & c= -5 in the original equation
X = -3 +/- √¯(32 - (4 x 2 x (-5))) - 3+/- √¯(9 + 40) - 3 +/- 7
--------------------------------- = ------------------- = -------------
2 x 2 4 4
So X has two values:
X = (-3-7)/4 = - 5/2
and
X = (-3+7)/4 = 1
Then the answer is: (X + 5/2) (X - 1)
Of course, you can corroborate it:
(X + 5/2) (X - 1) = X2 - X + 5/2 X -5/2 => X2 + 3/2 X - 5/2
If you want to simplify, you can multiply all terms by 2:
2X2 + (3/2x2) X - (5/2 x 2) => 2X2 + 3X -5 (the original equation)
