Suppose that you have a goal to drive two miles at an average rate of 60 miles per hour (mph). During the first mile you travel at a rate of 30 mph. How fast would you need to travel during the second mile in order to reach your goal of 60 mph for the total two-mile distance? (Remember rate is found by taking distance divided by time.)

1=30*t

t=1/30 of an hour

total distance=rate*total time

2=60*total time

2/60=total time

1/30 of an hour= total time

1/30 of an hour is 2 minutes

you need 2 minutes to go 2 miles, the first mile at 30 mph and the second mile at X mph for an average of 60 mph

you already used up all your time going 30 mph for 1 mile

you have no time left

this is an impossible situation
