When 75mL of 12M hydrochloric acid hcl are diluted to a new volume of 250mL the new molar concentration becomes?

This is an example of a dilution calculation.  

(1)  C₁V₁ = C₂V₂

      C is the concentration

      V is the volume

 

(2)  C₁ = 12 M, V₁ = 75 mL

 

(3)  C₂ = x       V₂ =  250 mL

 

(4)  12 M * (75 mL) = x * (250 mL)       Notice that my volume is in mL, that is ok as long as the volume is mL for both V₁ and V₂

(5)  C₂ =  3.6 M
