Distributive Property expressions

 Habeeb works at an apple orchard picking apples all day. He gets paid $0.12 for every apple he picks. Ina five day workweek, he picks 450, 359, 567, 678, and 407 apples, respectively. Write an expression that shows how you would find the amount he earned in the five day workweek using the Distributive Property. Solve the expression.

Based on the information provided, consider the equation.....

 

Total Weekly $$ Amount Earned = $0.12x(450+357+567+678+407)

 

Executing the distributive property for $0.12 to each term inside the parenthesis, get.....

$ WeeklyTotal=($0.12x450)+($0.12x357)+....and so on.  

 

Each term (after distribution) gives the dollar amount earned EACH day for five days (five terms).  For weekly total earned, simply add all terms AFTER distribution.

 

Note:  You could have also added the pick totals for the five days, then multiplied by $0.12 to get the total $$ amount for the week, but that would have NOT been using the Distributive Property!
