Question

A machine produces open boxes using square sheets of metal. The machine cuts equal sized squares measuring one inch on a side from the corners and the shapes the metal into an open box by turning up the sides. If each box must have a volume of 81 cubic inches find the length and width of the open box

For a box:

 

      Volume = Area of the base * height

 

The height = 1 inch (the upturned sides) and the volume is 81 cu. in.

 

      81 = Area of Base * 1

 

      81/1 = 81 = area of base = length*width

 

Since the original metal sheet is square., length = width = √81 = 9 inches.  The box is 9 by 9 by 1 inch.
