Always start inside the parenthesis or brackets. So the first step is to turn -3(4 - y) = -12 + 3y. Then you have
3y = 4[5 - 12 + 3y]
3y = 4[-7 + 3y]
3y = -28 + 12y
Now put all the y terms on one side of the equals sign.
-9y = -28
y = 28 / 9
