Table cloth area

Question

A table is 6ft long and 4ft wide. A table cloth covers the entire table and there is 1ft of extra cloth hanging over each edge of the table. What is the area of the table cloth.

For the table cloth to hang 1 ft over each of 4 edges (drawing a picture helps), the table cloth must be 1+6+1=8 ft by 1+4+1=6 ft.

 

The area is of the table cloth is  L*W = 8 ft * 6 ft = 48 sq ft.

the table cloth would be 7 ft long and 5 ft wide based upon this information. Therefore, you take the formula for the area of a rectangle, width times length, or A=w*l, and plug the number into the equation. giving you A=5*7, which is equal to 35 ft².
