a child wanted liquid rather than chewable tylenol. The doctor suggested a dose of two 40mg chewable tablets 4 times a day. The elixir has 160 mg/ml. How many ml should the child get per dose? How many ml per day?

First we need to determine how many mg of Tylenol will be in one dose, then how much per day. 

 

For 1 dose:

 

2 tabs x 40 mg each = 80 mg/dose

 

For the day:

 

80 mg x 4 times a day = 320 mg

 

We know the drug's concentration is 160mg/ml. Using ratio and proportion, we can figure out how many ml to give for 1 dose and how many ml to dispense for 1  day.

 

For 1 dose

 

160mg = 80 mg

1 ml         xml

 

cross multply  (80)(1) = 160(x)

divide both sides by 160 

Answer:  0.5 ml for 1 dose

 

For 1 day:

 

You can do the math the same way by substituting 320 mg into the above equation, or you know the child will get 0.5 ml  four times a day.  0.5x4= 2 ml
