The rectangular swimming pool measures 40 feet by 60 feet and contains a path of uniform width around four edges. The perimeter of the rectangle formed by the pool and the surrounding path is 240feet. Determine the width of the path

w represents the width of the path

 

The length of the perimeter of the path: 60 + 2w

The width of the perimeter of the path: 40 + 2w

 

2(40 + 2w) + 2(60 + 2w) = 240         divide both sides by 2

40 + 2w + 60 + 2w = 120                  combine like terms

100 + 4w = 120                                 subtract 100 from both sides

4w = 20                                              divide both sides by 4

w = 5
