1) subtract 4 from both sides

 

-3x + 4 - 4 = 20 - 4

 

2) simplify

 

-3x = 16

 

3) divide by -1/3 on both sides

 

-1/3 (times) -3 x = 16 (times) -1/3

 

4) simplify

 

x = -16/3 or -5 1/3  (5 and 1/3 [one third])
