I need help writing a word problem using mixed numbers to represent adding or subtracting rational numbers

A recipe for two dozen cookies calls for two and one-third cups of flour, one quarter cup milk, one fourth cup vegetable oil, and three and one half cups sugar.

 

1)  How much of each ingredient do you need to make two dozen cookies?

2)  How much of each ingredient do you need to make six cookies  (one half dozen)?

 

Just off the top of my head for adding and subtracting mixed numbers...

A mixed number is a number that is greater than 1, unlike a fraction that is a number greater than 0 but less than 1.

 

 

2 1/2 = 2.5

 

2 is the whole number.  1/2 is the fraction part.  So 2 1/2 is a number between 2 and 3.

 

 

This number is greater than 1 and a mixed number can be turned into an improper fraction.  An improper fraction is a fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator.  This number is also rational because, there not too many significant digits after the decimal point.

 

 

Now that you know the concept of mixed numbers and rational numbers, we can write a word problem.

 

 

A recipe for a large batch of cookies requires 6 3/4 cups of milk.  You already have 2 cups of milk.  How many more cups of milk do you need to make the cookies?
