Please help me out with the following question

Last Saturday, each half of a hockey match lasted 40 minutes and the half-time interval was a quarter of an hour. The match started at 2:30pm. At what time did it finish?

Half time interval is 15minutes but how does one figure out how many halves are in a hockey match? I searched up that a hockey match has 3 periods.
Help is greatly appreciated

Mark M.

The question is incorrectly written. You are correct. Hockey has three period. Each period is 20 minutes and each of the intermissions are 18.

While an actual hockey game has 3 periods, the question tells you the match has halves and that there is a half-time interval.  This means that the match has TWO halves.  There is a reason football games have QUARTERS, because there are FOUR of them.  Soccer has HALVES, because there are TWO of them.  Hockey normally has PERIODS and baseball has INNINGS because we don't have common names for 3 or 9 parts of something.

Timothy A. is right to observe that math word problems often misrepresent reality;  they also give TMI (for example, Saturday means nothing in this problem).  We also assume that there are no time stoppages during a half.

Now, you can either add the numbers sequentially like Timothy A. did (a column is recommended) or you could convert the minute total to 95 and add that to 2:30.  So. here is a column for you to practice adding hours and minutes:
       2:30
          40
          15
          40
    --------
4:05       (notice that you carry when you get to 10 or else to 6, and if hours go past 12,
                              additional rules may apply.)
