Is there any more to the problem?  Is it asking how far the bicyclist traveled?  

If so distance = (12 m/hr)x(45 min)x(1/60)hr/min = 12 x(45/60) = 12 x(3/4) = 9 miles.  Let me know if there is more to the problem.

This looks like it is developing into one of those "D-I-R-T" problems.

    You know, Distance Is Rate times Time.

 

In this problem, rate (speed) is constant and has the units of miles per hour.

Time equals 45 and has the units of minutes (so we must convert to hours or else convert hours to minutes).

 

Distance = Rate [ or speed ] * Time

    Distance = (12 miles/hour)*(45 minutes)*[(1 hour)/(60 minutes)]  

                              (note: minutes and hour cancel out, leaving miles)

    Distance = 9 miles

 

If the bicyclist changed speed to 16 miles per hour, the distance covered in 45 minutes would be 12 miles.

 

Instead, if the bicyclist traveled at 12 miles per hour for an hour, the distance would (of course) be 12 miles.
