A piece of metal is cut into 6 pieces of equal length. If the cut pieces are each 35 cm shorter than the orig. piece, how long was the orig. piece of metal

---------------------------------------------- (Orig means Original)

Mark M.

Each of the pieces cannot all be 35 cm shorter than the original. Please check the wording.

Mark M. cannot edit his comment (but WyzAnt is aware of that) and Arthur D. has calculated the original length to be 42 cm.  EACH of the 6 pieces of length 7 cm is indeed 35 cm shorter than the original piece of length 42 cm.

Note:  If the 6 pieces are of equal length, then any one of them must have a length of (35 cm less than 42 cm).  It is somewhat ambiguous to use the word "all" because people don't know whether that means collectively or individually.
