In a partnership, each owns a percentage of the company, usually based on the capital or work-in-kind invested.
If the profit is $84,000, then A is entitled to 1/3 of it. "Of" usually means multiply,
so (1/3)*84000 = A = $28,000
Also, we're told that A+B+C = 84000 [eq1]
and that A + C = B [eq2]
--------------------
B = 84000 - B [subtract eq2 from eq1]
2*B = 84000 [add B to both sides]
B = $42,000 [divide both sides by 2]
Plug the value of A and B into eq1:
28000 + 42000 + C = 84000
70000 + C = 84000
C = $14,000 [subtract 70000 from both sides]
Checking:
Is $28,000 + $42,000 + $14,000 = $84,000 [eq1] ? yes
Is $28,000 + $14,000 = $42,000 [eq2] ? yes
