Jane has 35 coins consisting of nickels and quarters. If the total value of the coins is $4.95, how many nickels and how many quarters does she have? Show the equations and work.

One way:

 

(-0.05)*(n + q = 35) = -0.05n+(-0.05)q = -1.75

 

    (-0.05)n+(-0.05)q = -1.75

+    0.05n+0.25q = 4.95

=  0*n + 0.20*q = 3.20

So q = 3.20/0.20 = 16

 

Then substitute value of q into n + q = 35 => n = 35 - 16 = 19 therefore

 

n = 19 nickels

q = 16 quarters
