Now

 

2x - y      = 4.....equation 1

2x + 10y =48....equation 2

 

Now subtract equation 2 by 1

 

-11y = -44

So, y = 4

 

Put y =4 on 2x -y =4, 2x-4=4, 2x=8, x=4

 

Hence x=4 and y=4

 

Also check the equations using x and y values

Using substitution Solve for y in 1st equation

2x-y = 4     (add y over and subtract 4 over to other side to make y all by itself)

y = 2x- 4

 

Now take 2nd equations and substitute for y  since y=2x-4

 

x+5y=24

x+ 5 (2x-4) = 24

 

Now distribute 5 into the bracket

 

x+ 10x - 20 = 24      Now combine like terms 

11x-20 = 24             Add 20 over to the other side

11x = 24+20

11x = 44                  Now divide the 11 over

x = 4                        Use this answer to find y.

 

y = 2x- 4

y= 2(4)-4

y=8-4
