Setting up a ratio

There are 2400 people that attended the local fair this past weekend. If the ratio of men to women to children is 8:16:24, then how many women were at the fair?

The ratio 8:16:24 adds up to 8 + 16 + 24 = 48 people.  The ratio of women to people is 16:48.  If we let w = the number of women:

 

16/48 = w/2400
