A painter leans a ladder against one wall of a house (see diagram). The ladder is 15 feet long. The base of the ladder is 9 feet from the house. How high up the wall is the ladder?

h = the height of the ladder on the wall

 

Using Pythagoras

 

h² + 9² = 15²

h² + 81 = 225

h² = 144

h = ±12

 

The ladder touches the wall 12 feet above the ground.
