A store owner sells two pairs of running shoes for each pair of high tops. He plans to order 144 pairs of shoes. How many pairs should be high tops?

Let R = # running shoes sold

Let H = # hightops sold

 

We want to order 144 pairs of shoes so R + H = 144

Since we sell twice as many running shoes as hightops then R = 2H

 

Simply substitute 2H in place of R in the first equation giving

2H + H = 144

3H = 144

H = 48

 

He should order 48 pairs of hightops

Since R = 2H then R = 2(48) = 96 so he should order 96 pairs of running shoes

This question is very much like the others you've asked recently.

 

Let x = number of high tops he will sell. Since he'll sell two pairs of running shoes for each pair of high tops, he will sell 2x pairs of running shoes.

 

Use that to write an equation for the shoes he will order, then solve for x.

Let R = # running shoes sold.   Let H = # high tops sold

We want R + H to be 144  and  H to be equal to 2R so we have two equations

 

R + H = 144

H = 2R

 

Substitute 2R in place of H in the first equation

R + 2R = 144

3R = 144

R = 38

 

Since hightops is given by H = 2R then H = 2(48) = 96

 

He should get 48 running shoes and 96 hightops
