a pottery studio gives three-hours ceramic classes for $22 an hour. if the studio has collected $1452 for a total of 19 classes, how many three and four hours classes were paid

Let x be the number of four-hour classes, and 19 - x be the number of three-hour classes. Each four-hour class costs 4 x $22 = $88, and each 3-hour class costs 3 x $22 = $66. $88x is the amount of money made from from four hour classes, and $66(19 - x) is the amount of money made from three hour classes.

 

$88x + $66(19 - x) = $1452

$22x = $1452 - $1254

$22x = $198

x = 9

 

So 9 four-hour classes were paid for and 19 - 9 = 10 three-hour classes were paid for.
