The volume of the pool is pretty straight-forward to calculate:
V = l×w×h
V = 40(20)(4)
V = 3200
The pool has 3,200 ft3 of water in it.
Since there are 7.5 gallons in 2 cubic feet, there are 7.5 g / 2 ft3 = 3.75 gallons per cubic foot.
The pool has 3200 cubic feet of water in it, which is 3200(3.75) = 12,000 gallons of water.
(That conversion factor isn't actually right, by the way. 2 cubic feet is actually equal to about 15 gallons. But it's usually best just to use the numbers the problem gives you.)
