Matt and Anna are frequent fliers at fastngo airlines. they often fly between two cities that are a distance of 1680 miles apart. on one particular trip they flew into the wind and the trip took 4 hours. the return trip with the wind behund them only took about 3 hours. find the speed of the wind and the speed of the plane in still air.

distance=rate*time

1680=(r-w)*4

1680=(r+w)*3

r=rate and w=speed of the wind

divide first equation by 4 and divide second equation by 3

420=r-w

560=r+w

add

980=2r

r=980/2

r=490 mph

420=r-w, 420=490-w, w=70 mph

560=490+70, 560=560

speed of the plane=490 mph, speed of the wind=70 mph
