you have 3 rectangles to find the areas of, one at the bottom and one on each side; the top rectangle (the 1/4 inch frame around the screen) does not get eliminated
the bottom rectangle is 8 inches by 1/4 inch
each side rectangle is 7.5 inches by 1/4 inch (where does the 7.5 come from ? the side length is 8 inches but you have 1/4 inch on the top and 1/4 inch on the bottom, so 8-1/4-1/4=7.5)
A=8*(1/4)=2 square inches
A=7.5*(1/4)=1.875 square inches on the left and 1.875 square inches on the right
total area=2+1.875+1.875=5.75 square inches of screen space will be recovered
