When we talk about feeding mechanisms, we’re really asking: How does an organism physically obtain and process its food? The structure of the organism usually determines the mechanism.
The major types include:
1. Filter (or suspension) feeding – Organisms strain small food particles from water. Example: baleen whales and clams. Their anatomy is adapted to capture particles efficiently.
2. Deposit feeding – Organisms consume sediment and extract organic material from it. Earthworms are a classic example.
3. Fluid feeding – Organisms feed on nutrient-rich fluids like blood or plant sap. Think mosquitoes or aphids.
4. Mass (bulk) feeding – Organisms ingest large pieces of food. Most mammals, including humans, fall into this category.
In biology and nutrition, we connect feeding mechanisms to energy efficiency, digestive adaptations, and ecological roles. The key idea is that form and function are always linked.
