Sum means addition (+) and in an addition problem the bigger number goes on top
Starting with the numbers on the right, add the top and bottom numbers
24 + 12 = 36
Hope this helps!

To find the sum of 12 and 24, we can use the following method:
1 2
+ 2 4
------------
First: add 2 and 4 in the ones place
6
Then: add 1 and 2 in the tens place
3
Putting them together leaves us with:
3 6
To find the “sum” of something means you need to add the numbers together. A lot of people have trouble remembering which operation to do to find the sum.
If you need help with adding the numbers, there are a variety of different methods you can use to get the correct answer. I always like to help students find the method that works best for them.
Here’s one way that a lot of kids find easy.
Add the 10 + 20 = 30
Then add the 2 + 4 = 6
Add the 30 + 6 = 36
That’s it!
Easy Peasy!
With a some practice, you can probably learn how to do that in your head!
Look at how smart you are!!

First we add the numbers in the ones places: 2+4 = 6. Then we add the numbers in the tens places: 10+20 = 30. We add these results together to get 36.
