The most common auxiliary verb used for the passe compose is "avoir". But etre is very important for reflexive verbs and to express emotions and feelings. It is interesting that being hungry or thirsty require the verb avoir however! The grammar in term of tuning the verb to the subject or the complement d'object direct (COD) is not that complicated after you know how to recognize a COD and its location in reference to the verb.
