The six classes of nutrients are divided into categories:
Macronutrients (which provide energy and are needed in larger amounts)
- Cabrohydrates
- Protien
- Fats/Lipids
Micronutrients (do not provide energy and are needed in smaller amounts)
- Vitamins
- Minerals
The sixth nutrient is water, as our bodies need it to function properly.
Some have considered alcohol as the "fourth macronutrient" as it gives 7kcals per gram consumed, but that has been up for debate since it is not essential to human health.
