Affect is a verb. To affect something is to change it.
- Using it as a verb: You can affect how well a plant grows by the amount of water and sunlight you provide it.
Effect can be either a noun or a verb. As a noun, it is the result of a change. As a verb, it means to bring about change.
- Using it as a noun: The plant was effected by the generous sunlight and regular watering schedule.
- Using it as a verb: I hoped to effect a healthier plant by adding fertilizer to its water.

This can be a tricky one to remember, especially for newer readers and writers. Others have posted excellent examples though so I won't elaborate on those further.

Yes, I can explain the difference between "effect" and "affect".
"Affect" is a verb that means to produce a change or influence something. It refers to the action of producing an impact or bringing about a change. For example, "The rain affected the traffic."
"Effect" is a noun that refers to the result of an action or event. It is the outcome or consequence of something that has happened. For example, "The effect of the rain was heavy traffic."
In short, "affect" is a verb that means to influence or produce a change, while "effect" is a noun that refers to the outcome or consequence of an action or event.

The term "affect" is how something has an impact on the change or difference in it. This is a verb.
Ex: The man had a flat affect on his face when he heard the news. It means he showed no change or emotion.
The term "effect" is the result or consequence of another cause. This is a noun.

This is a great question! Many people struggle with affect/effect because they are almost always pronounced the same way. One of my teachers in high school taught me a simple way to remember, and it was so helpful to me that I still use it to this day when I am writing.
A is for Action. Affect with an 'a' is an action word (verb).
E is for End Result. Effect with an 'e' is the end result of something.
Some examples:
"Eating too much sugar will affect my body" vs. "Eating too much sugar had an effect on my body"
"If an object is affected by heat, then heat will have an effect on the object"
"Being sick affected by work output" vs. "Being sick had a big effect on my work output"
I hope this helps!

Affect is a verb and effect is a noun. Use a thesaurus to find synonyms for each word. Replace the synonyms for the word that you don't know in the sentence and ask yourself: "Does this synonym make sense?" Your answer should be "Yes!" "Does it change the meaning of my sentence?" Your answer should be "No!" If it doesn't work, try again :) Examples: Affect synonyms: influence, impact, inspire, upset Jane's injury will affect the final game. Effect synonyms: result, consequence, outcome, reaction The effects of physical therapy on Jane's injury will be successful. *These are two words are tricky ones for EVERYBODY!*03/15/23
